Girl on the Street Inside a Cultural Mosaic

Ahem. Yes. I've been at it again. Much to the embarrassment of my family members who were ducking down in the back seat of the car. I've been doing some 'Drive By Shooting'.

I was reading Natalie's blog and took a step outside her door into the world of Girl on the Street. After reading about the remarkable contributors and the incredible Chauncey Zalkin, it occurred to me that the entire planet could be represented on that blog or any other international blog from inside Canada alone. Here, the testing ground of peace, tolerance, understanding and harmony. (that Global Leaders don't seem to be tracking)

We are a 'Cultural Mosaic'. Women come from far and wide. A country where over 200 ethnic groups live, love and learn together. You'll notice on my sidebar that I describe my editorial content in this way. Freedom, friendship and opportunity are evident everywhere I look. And it's working.

These two women (mother/daughter?), were walking on Yonge Street. The longest street in the Greater Toronto Area. Perhaps they are Latin, Italian, Portuguese or from the Middle East. In my home, Canada, it does not matter. We are like an intricate, colourful, strong mosaic back splash in a kitchen. A place is set for everyone and everyone is welcome. How about that? Click on the photo to enlarge. I love the irony of the sign in the background. Mona Lisa. I also love the girl's belt, their sunglasses and the running shoes. By the way, stripes are in for Spring. They were everywhere...but you already new that.

Philadelphia Freedom

If you were to walk into my great room this afternoon, you'd find it a tad disheveled and tossed about. I get in those moods when I just 'must' change things up. Here on the most comfortable chair in the history of chairs; now owned 'with a deed' by the dog, are three things that tug at my heart strings. One, my 12 year old son's blue jeans thrown in a heap. I just love 'boys' clothes. There is something about Sons & Moms. He decided on the Nike pants instead for outdoor ice-skating at a neighbour's home. Two, a beach portrait of my 22 year old daughter when she was little. I can feel the sandy breeze in her hair and the warmth of the setting sun kissing her velvet skin. I remember that day like it was yesterday. Taken at Constance Bay, near Ottawa. Three, my all time favorite photo I've taken. The majestic Swann Memorial Fountain in downtown Philadelphia. The large 'river god' Native American figures symbolize the area's major streams, the Delaware, the Schuylkill, and the Wissahickon. It was a stifling hot day and the fountain pool was full of children, a city tradition (which sadly is now prohibited), but when I got home and developed the film (circa 1997), there was only this young boy peeking his face out of the water. He was about the same age as my son is now. He was obviously dirt poor, living in one of those horrid boxes under the bridge near by; break my heart, and he found some 'freedom' swishing away his worries whilst the tourists clicked away. I cried. I will never forget that moment. Ever.

I plan to scan this photo and do something with it, perhaps even make some posters. You can see it better if you click to enlarge.

I just can't seem to say his name right

Could be that my lips are frostbitten from the gnarly Canadian winter or it's a word association thing happening, but every time I want to say Barack Obama, I say Osama bin Laden. I had a long conversation about this with my Mom the other night while we watched AC. I couldn't believe it! She has the same problem. Tongue-tied over a potential President. Might it be genetic? I'm off to Montreal on a business trip so I'll do a random focus group questionnaire with some associates and see if my Mom and I are 'nuts' or in good company. We have made an executive decision though. From now on we are going to call him. 'B.O.' We realize it's the other guy that stinks, but this is how it's gotta be. Out of respect. Oh Oh. Sigh.

The Blues

Some times blogging gives me the blues. I have so much to say and so much to offer and at times I feel like there isn't anybody out there reading, listening, commenting. And then I pick myself up and dust myself off and say 'For god's sake woman, get a grip on yourself. Who cares?'. I started this blog to share my ideas, photos, commentary, life and work. It's my little world onto itself. In the beginning I was hoping for just one person to link me. Just one. And then a wonderful blogger Beach Bungalow 8 did! And then another and another and another. How amazing I thought. To be validated like that. So I want to thank each and every one of you who have linked Liberty Post. It means so much to me. Now for some of you bloggers who have hundreds of links, you may think, big deal, a link. But to me, a link is someone who cares. Who shares. Who gets you or at the very least is interested in your voice, your style, your offering. Some times blogging gives me the blues and then it all comes out in the wash like a wonderful, indigo 'thinking of you' card; you get a lovely comment...like the one I got today from Restyled Home. Thank you. By the way, my favorite colour is blue, so everything is going to be O.K..

Dreamy Vintage

The goal for this shoot was to create the look of late 1950's. I have to say, I am pleased with the way they turned out. A la Marilyn.

Bloggers Own Magazines

After I did this photoshoot over the weekend, I thought, well, well - this one could be the front cover of a magazine and because I own my own magazine (as do all of you), I thought it would be fun to create a 'mock' one. I'm loving this freedom idea - we are all creating content and we are building readership. Bloggers will be the millionaires of the future. Trust me on that one!

Judith

You would never know that this woman is normally in jeans, hoodie and baseball cap with her long, curly auburn hair twisted in a messy knot. That's what I love about creating portraiture. You can transform anyone into 'a jewelry heiress?, a princess?, a fashion house CEO?'. Actually she's a spunky, ball-of-fire single Mom with boundless energy and a schedule in publishing that would exhaust the best of us.

Learning to Make Faces

What's a little girl to do when her Bubby always has a camera? Learn how to make faces! I am having great fun (and belly laughs) teaching her how to pose for me! Sad, Half Smile and Surprised! Not bad for someone who's not even two! xo

Thanks to Beach Bungalow 8

Thank You so much to Beach Bungalow 8 for adding my blog to her links. I can't tell you how happy I am. It's my first link! Big Hug! Be sure to visit her blog often. It's wonderful. It's so nice to have blog friends.
