The Long Long Spring Thaw

It is with great pride and excessive politeness that I ask you for forgiveness yet again for discussing the weather. I am Canadian after all.  We chat about this topic every 15 minutes every day of the week. The sulk continues all year.  Too humid. Too freezing. Too grey. Too windy. Too foggy. One could never state that Canada's weather is predictable and boring. Not like, say, the Middle East.

The citizens of this expansive, geographical wonder deserves an Olympic medal for remaining (generally) happy with all the temperatures and conditions that are literally thrown at us by Mother Nature.  Those skilled hockey teams and figure skaters have nothing on us!  We have mastered the ever changing forecast.

It is Spring. Apparently. I have made a promise. As long as it is not a white out blizzard then I am going to embrace what's happening outside wholeheartedly.  Openly. With gratitude. No complaining!

April. You aren't fooling us!  Dammit all though. Would you mind sending warm sunshine?

Death of A Camera Part II Go Fund Me

I got my new camera!
Thank You!
Read all about it here.

UPDATE Below!

The story goes like this and it's not a fish story, nor is it embellished as some may have you believe I tend to do with tang and giggles:

I killed a second camera.

Truth. I was scoping shot locations for an upcoming wedding. Juggling my big cam, baby pro cam and mobile cam. (I've been practicing this skill and actually, I'm pretty darn good.)

The grass was dewy, slightly overcast; the sun making all efforts to appear. Click. Click. Then I reached for my baby pro cam - my oxygen, my favorite child, my lover, my confidante - my anti-depressant - and could not find her.

Panic set in. Eyes quickly darting in the vicinity of green. Nothing.

Heart races. Chest tightens. Tears well up. Oh. My. God.

Foot Stomp.

Loud, very loud f-word.

The story continues:

I say (out loud)

"God. You don't want me to be a Photographer do you?"

"God! Twice!!!"

"God. Are you sending me a message?"

"God. My creative output is really, really flowing well lately. Come on!"

"God. I'm pretty pissed off at you lately. Middle East! Airplanes! Tornadoes!"

"God. Are you punishing me?"

"Dear God. Maybe if people really do love my work, they may chip in to help me get another one quickly."

"God?"

Well, the camera landed in Walters Falls. Depression has set in.

Maybe you would like to help.

UPDATE:  You have funded 10% of my $600 goal in 1 day! Thank You So Much!
GOAL: $600 by August 18, 2014

Beach Clouds

Wasaga Beach has incredible performances; free I might add, by the sky. Courtesy of Mother Nature and her clouds.  (Of course I pushed the edit and saturation...why not!) They make little works of art.

Jack Dorsey on Twitter, Square and Kitchener-Waterloo

The desire to innovate is the key motivator for Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and CEO of new San Francisco-based venture Square.
The famously shy billionaire spends his time thinking about how to do the things we do better and more easily and shepherding the process to market.

Film festivals launch some fascinating new films

(NC) Autumn is film festival season and this year's crop of productions has something for everyone.
• If you're looking for a thriller, check out Enemy. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a man who spots his exact double in a movie and sets out to find him, turning both of their lives upside down in the process.
• The F Word, a romantic comedy from director Michael Dowse (FUBAR), explores a young man (Daniel Radcliffe, in his first romantic lead) struggling to accept that he has been “friend-zoned” by the girl of his dreams (Zoe Kazan).
• In The Art of the Steal, directed by Jonathan Sobol, Kurt Russell plays a motorcycle daredevil and art thief ready to pull off one last job with his brother (Matt Dillon), but things go awry as the old team gets together to steal a priceless historical book.
• Fans of a darker comedy shouldn't miss The Husband, the gut-wrenching story of a man juggling a miserable ad-agency job, an infant son, and a wife in jail (following her affair with a teenager).
• Watermark, a visually stunning documentary co-directed by photographer Edward Burtynsky and filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal, explores the ways that humanity uses (and abuses) one of our most vital resources, water.
More than just great entertainment, these films were each made here in Ontario with support from the Ontario Media Development (OMDC) Film Fund, which provides funding for Ontario producers for feature films.
“OMDC drives investment and job creation by working with talented local producers and attracting international productions,” says Karen Thorne-Stone, CEO of the organization. “Our multi-billion dollar creative economy is putting us on the map and showing audiences all around the world what Ontario has to offer.”
Film and television are big business in our province, contributing $1.3 billion to the provincial GDP and employing 29,000 people last year.
“Production has doubled since 2008 and keeps growing thanks to Ontario's prime locations, skilled crews, modern studios, visual FX services, competitive financial incentives and a world-class Film Commission,” Thorne-Stone points out.
More made-in-Ontario films to add to your viewing list can be found at omdc.on.ca, on twitter @OMDCtweets, or at Facebook.com/OMDCOnline.

Labels on-pack help Canadians select the perfect cut of beef

Always full of flavor, Canadian beef has loads of culinary opportunities. Beef cuts each have distinct and unique characteristics so they can be used for different types of meals. Do you want to cook low and slow for a fork tender stew or grill quickly for a tender steak-house experience? For either meal, you'll need a different cut of beef for the job.
“Blade Steak is perfect for a stew” for example, “but if it is grilled like a Rib Steak you'll be disappointed – to say the least” explains Joyce Parslow, home economist with Canada Beef. “Buying the right cut and cooking it right is the key”.
To simplify buying and cooking beef, many savvy grocers have adopted a naming system that helps. They group beef cuts into basic Cooking Categories. The Cooking Category phrase is incorporated right into the name of the beef.

Check it out next time you're at the meat counter. Like most people's names, beef cuts are given a first, middle and last name: The first name designates the cut of beef such as a Strip Loin or Inside Round. The second name designates the Cooking Category – the ideal cooking method for the cut. The last name refers to cut shape such as a steak or roast. For example, a Strip Loin Steak would bear the name: Strip Loin Grilling Steak.
Dan Ferguson is a Canadian cattle farmer happy about Canadian beef's labeling system at grocery stores. “It's a helpful way for consumers to select the perfect cut of meat,” explains Dan.
It also helps consumers understand they can interchange cuts of meat within a suggested Cooking Category and still get great results. So if your favourite Rib Eye Grilling Steak is not available, you can switch over to another Grilling Steak like Strip Loin Grilling Steak.
Name-calling takes on a whole new light when it comes down to shopping for beef.
