Marla Olmstead

Sweet and innocent and painfully shy. The quietest student in her class. But all alone she paints. And paints. And paints. This is where she can find her life and her world. If you have a child who is an artist; born an artist, this documentary is a must see. I believe there is an underlying message. In my opinion, if a child is born with an obvious talent and is drawn to; compelled to do it all the time, then it is the responsibility of the adults around that child to nurture that 'soul purpose' to its fullest. Otherwise, the geniuses of our time, our future will never come to fruition.

I also believe each one of us are drawn to our talents but kids like this are driven in hyper drive. It is sad to me how many kids with talents are forgotten or pushed to the side. I like stories like this one where the parents have identified it.

Thank you for posting this! As a child all I wanted to do was draw and paint and make things out of things, my parents discouraged me with the intent of me becoming more substantial- go to university, be somebody- that certainly didn't work...so when my son expressed passion about filming we supported him with cameras and opportunities. He is very talented and moving ahead though the film industry sucks...indie is the future. He will not be studying at university to become something "more substantial".

She's amazing! I never used to be into abstract work that much, but it started to grow on me when I went to Uni. minoring in art. This girls work is really beautiful (:

Is Marla any different than any other major artist today? Damien Hirst produces only a few of his works himself. He simply instructs others what to do. Yet his works bring the highest prices of any living artist today.

The most important artist today producing blow glass does not blow glass anymore he simply runs his corporation. Dale Chihuly was injured in several instances and cannot physically produce his own work, he does not even sign it himself.

My point being that art is a commodity today. Picasso started the trend and others have continued it. Art is in fact about promotion and business not art.
Should we expect anything different from the Olmstead family today? And does it really make any difference? I think not and further the only thing that matters is the work. The work that I have seen of Marla's is creative fresh and some of it is of real quality so as far as Ia m concerned it makes not difference if fifty people help her the paintings are hers and stand on their own.
