Actually, this was in my inbox first thing this morning. I had the same reaction as you....do I think it's clever or not? My first reaction was yes, from an advertising standpoint it's very good. It's a very creative way to encourage people to keep shopping and fueling the economy. I'm sure that there will be others who say otherwise.
Basically the point is that if people panic and quit spending the situation will get so much worse. I'm old enough to have seen the cycle at least three times.
