Puppy Mills Are Legal

Can you believe that? They are legal. I learned about this yesterday watching Lisa Ling go undercover in the Amish region of the States. Did you also know that 99% of all dogs sold at pet stores are from puppy mills? Imagine. The dogs are treated like agricultural commodities - no more sacred than an ear of corn. The following organizations and resources offer additional information on adopting animals and fighting back against puppy mills. I'm just so glad we got Paige from a private home breeder. I will go to rescue shelters in the future to get more darlings. How about you?

I watched that too! I can't believe that they can get away with it because it's considered livestock...... Poor dogs!

About 3 weeks ago here in Tucson the Humane Society took 800+ chihuahuas from a puppy mill and the couple that had them were not charged with anything. 200+ were taken to Phoenix or San Diego and the rest (except the 100+ pregnant ones) were adopted in Tucson within 2 days. I still may get one of the puppies. We have 3 wonderful rescued dogs and will probably not buy another from a breeder. It is mind boggling what goes on--thanks for educating people.

I didn't see the whole show but the part where they were putting those really nice dogs to sleep broke my heart. I'm a bit of a rescue fanatic so the fact that Oprah shed some light on this issue made me pretty happy.

We've had similar horrific stories here in Australia, apart from this direct cruelty, there seems to be no thought put into the breeding, as to genetic disorders....I've heard of many people buying dogs from pet shops etc. and they've ended up with heart break as the animal needed major surgery such as hip replacements etc., even worse heart complaints where the animal had had to be put down.
Good on you for making people aware!!

Thank you for all your touching comments about this topic....the saddest thing for me was that they (Puppy Mills) consider males completely useless and many of them are shot to death.
