Wool and the Talent Envelopes

Knitting is a mysterious skill to me. Some seem to do it naturally, while others remain all thumbs; tense and twisted, the later in reference to my current ability. My Mom has got the magic. In contrast, let me bake pie and I'm secure. My Mom. She can't make crust. I think someone has the 'wool' pulled over our eyes. Why is it that some of us can master some things and others can't? Is it a subconscious choice we each make or are the gifts we have tucked into pretty 'talent envelopes' at birth?
