I am very careful at my blog to post only what is true and verifiable. It is important to not cross the fine line between what is libel and what it is you can support. Especially while promoting a non-fiction book, it is essential to be careful to not editorialize beyond the supporting evidence you can supply.

Good post. It's as well to keep in mind that American free speech laws, and their SCOTUS interpretation, are different from Canadian, U.K., or Australia. Free speech in this country has been very broadly construed, which is why you have more libel and slander cases in other parts of the English speaking world. IIRC, in Australia, even speaking the truth isn't an iron-clad defense against libel. At the same time, none of the national courts have really laid down a lot of precedent in this area yet. Internet law is in it's infancy, and that won't change in the USA until a lot of case law moves through the entire system, which could take decades here.

Fascinating topic - have followed link after link and have my nights reading plan ahead of me. I was threatened a lawsuit by my builders... when outlining (very truthfully) the 'challenges' in my house build on my blog. "We'll build ya house and then we'll take it off you"...now my blog is all butterflies and rainbows.... the truth? ... well that's another story... saved for a coffee shop conversation. A-M xx
