Consumers Boycott Tiger Woods' Endorsement Companies Because They Are Dropping Him

LP: Tiger Woods will catch that 'first stone you cast' at him. Yes he will, for he is human and that means he is allowed to and expected to make mistakes. I've had a revelation overnight listening, watching and reading all the 'Go on, Be a Tiger' bashing, hit a fever pitch (putt). Let's face it. Tiger wasn't meant to be married, that's obvious, so let's 'let him be' (and if he wants to and can work it out, great.) - if he wasn't married when all this happened, none of this would matter. As you know, one of the things that drives me c-r-a-z-y is judgemental people. None of us are perfect. Are you perfect? Prove it to me (if you think you are). I declare that the 'Boycott Tiger's Past Companies Year' to commence today and in to 2010. If a company walks away, drops, bops or banishes Tiger from their roster, then consumers around the globe will boycott said company. (Yes, I know, all of their Executives are prissy-pure-hearts with no skeletons or baggage or naughtiness in their past, present and future - I know, I know.) Let the backlash begin. 'Go on, Be a Tiger' (insert bully, hypocrite, asshole, self-righteous, bigot, dummy here) Let's see how you like it when your 'money-stream' is taken away 'just like that'. (How many people can play God? My understanding is that there is only one.)

Wow no one is perfect but over a dozen girls later. Easy for others to say but your name is not Elin Woods.

LIBERTY POST EDITOR said...

Anon, She (Elin) is a strong, confident woman. She will survive and succeed. And she'll get some money too. When it's over, it's over.

Well, I think he has gone over the top, I mean anyone in a relationship has to decide to forgive and live with one indiscretion......but come on, how could you ever trust again!?

LIBERTY POST EDITOR said...

Karena, Yes, all the trust in his marriage is gone, gone, gone...I know it would be gone for me if I was his wife. Tiger was a 'hound', but these companies are jumping the gun. He who casts the first stone.....

I'm a first-time visitor to your blog, because I read a lot of design blogs, but now is my last time. You are entitled to your opinion, but you are implying that no one else can disagree with you.

Plus, I don't think that "getting some money" makes up for finding out your husband is cheating while you have two very young children.

LIBERTY POST EDITOR said...

Anon #2, Sorry you feel this way. Liberty Post offers a buffet of interesting and wonderful posts..something for everyone..

LIBERTY POST EDITOR said...

Ooops...Anon #2...no such implying...anyone can disagree with me..that's what free speech is based on and I live by that.

Tiger is worth billions. If a few sponsers leave him boo hoo.
Money will never be an issue for him.

LIBERTY POST EDITOR said...

It's about the 'diaglogue' people. Let's talk.

LIBERTY POST EDITOR said...

This post is NOT about his money: this post is about the double standards and expectations we as a society (and media) place on our heroes. Glass houses and such...

LIBERTY POST EDITOR said...

Has anyone out there ever 'talked dirty' before, during or after sex - in person, via phone, text, email or letter? How would we like it if the whole damn world found out??? How is this relevant to his golf game, his endorsements or his private life? 'We' don't own Tiger Woods. I think it's time for forgiveness and I hope Tiger comes out soon to receive it from all of us. It is Christmas after all.

LIBERTY POST EDITOR said...

Thinking of Elin too....

Kerry said...

Well, right or wrong, we do get to decide whether or not we like what he does. When we like him he makes a shit load of money, when we don't he may not. That's just the way it is when your success is dependent on your popularity.

I believe that when someone has so much wealth and arrogance (again because we like him and watch him and buy the products he endorses...) that he can buy the silence of his enablers and mistresses, not tip in restaurants.... he is destined for disaster. He's not a victim.

And unless Elin knew that this was all going on long before they married, it is truly disgusting. No one has the right to expose their mate to God knows what because of their selfishness and arrogance. THAT is not okay, EVER!!!

So, call it "casting the first stone," but I don't like the guy any more. I'd like to say all the crap that's come out doesn't matter because he's a great golfer, blah, blah, blah, but, truthfully, yuck! And he doesn't tip?! Really?! He just doesn't seem to have regard for anyone but himself. Again, yuck!

It's simply a matter of business - not throwing stones. As a sports "hero" he had cache and respect. And with it came the assumption that people want to be like him and should be like him. And to have that, one would buy the products he's endorses. If he brings in buyers, then he's worth the money paid to him. When the respect and cache go missing, when he becomes the butt of jokes, then his value is diminished. Why would a company pay him millions when he's not worth it any longer? Part of any endorsement deal is a "morals clause" - in exchange for large sums of money, the endorser has to live up to the image he is being paid handsomely to portray. He broke his agreement with his pecadillos. One mistress would have been overlooked - this string of cocktail waitresses and porn stars shows he's got some deep seeded issues. Would you want your son, brother or husband to look up to him and emulate him? Doubtful. And if folks are no longer looking up to them, they are no longer going to buy the pricey products. And we're back to business. It's about business, it's not personal. Pure and simple.

Love ya, LPE! You're always raising the tough questions.

Linda Merrill,
thank you- you hit it dead on- it is about business, and his business value right now has diminished- so if companies want to drop him because of repeated bad behavior that is thier choice.. Tiger should have thought with his head instead of another part of his anatomy...

Anonymous said...

Linda, I agree, you are dead on. I doubt any of the executives of these companies care one way or another, they care about their bottom line. As a share holder in one of these, I'm glad that's what they care about. I invest my hard earned money for my future and my kids', if Tiger's not making money for them they should cut him, for this or any other reason... say he goes on a 4 year losing streak, same thing. Just business, no judgement. I do think that part of the reason people are judging him though, is that he CHOSE to be a role model. I really haven't seen this discussed, but I feel that an athlete is not automatically a role model or should be force into being one. That said, he would be living an incredibly comfortable life with his golf earnings alone. The minute he starts taking endorsement money however, he raises the stakes. He then owes that company his "brand" (most of these contracts have morality clauses anyway he knew what he was risking), people certainly don't vilify Tom Brady for having 2 babies with 2 different women out of wedlock. He takes his NFL earnings and goes home. You don't see his face plastered on everything from cars to watches to razors. Tiger has reaped what he has sown. Great topic, great comments!

You have a lovely weekend.

MAKING A "MISTAKE" OVER, AND OVER, AND OVER, x WELL, HOWEVER MANY IS CALLED A HABIT, OR WAY OF LIFE. NOT A MISTAKE.

HE IS A SMART MAN, AND KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING. WE ALL HAVE TO BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR OUR ACTIONS. EVEN A RICH CELEB.

One more thought... As I said, I don't like Tiger Woods so much any more because of the choices he's made and the way he's used people to do that. But what bothers me more is how willing we are to purchase things simply because someone we idolize is endorsing it? That's so bazar, really. How many times have celebrities gotten outed for using something other than the product they "endorse?" So to me, buy or boycott-- neither make sense to me.

Great blog, btw.

I have visited your blog several times over the past months but this will be my last time. What he did would completely immoral and as a previous poster said, he was fully aware of what he was doing all along. I think what he did to his family is morally reprehensible, there is no excuse and he should be held accountable.

He is deserving of forgiveness just like the rest of us (which can only be given purely from God), but I for one am too imperfect to overlook his 'indiscretions' so easily.

Anonymous said...

Hmm aren't you JUDGING the companies for not wanting to associate themselves with that type of behavior?

And BTW-you've lost another reader :o)

Anonymous said...

Losing readers because she has an opinion that differs from yours? Really?!

I commend you, LP, for taking this stand. And for being willing to take the heat that is coming your way! No matter which side of this any of us come down on, I hope everyone will pray for Tiger and his family. So much hurt to go around. Very unpleasant to watch. And I fear he has no spiritual base to connect to, to enable him to try to move forward. While many do not see him as a victim, and perhaps rightly so, I still view him as a human being in deep suffering. And I wonder who is there to hold him while he weeps. Not much compassion spread in his direction. Any addictive process is first, a disease of the spirit.
He is learning some extremely painful lessons at his own hand..a very bitter pill to swallow. Thankfully, Christ loves us in spite of our personal failings. I choose to continue to love him and forgive him, as I would hope to be loved and forgiven were I standing in his shoes. If all of this caused him to change his life, put him on a good and moral path, would it be worth it to the rest of us? Can we exact "a pound of flesh" and be done with it? If only he had not been married.....!

Boo Hoo Poor Tiger. Part of the baggage that comes with being a mega celebrity like Tiger is that you are under constant scrutiny. It's just part of the package. Ya play ya pay. He's paying now, it's as simple as that. I don't feel even remotely sorry for Tiger or care to boycott any of the the corporations that are dropping him. I feel sorry for the kids. He's a rather immature daddy don't ya think?

What else am I saying here: We (society) make 'sport' of peoples' lives. We put them up there an then we tear them down. It is trivial really and I guess it's only human. It's the Truman Show isn't it and I've just found out
'we' also do it to Bloggers. Shame on us.

Design and The Arts are the 2 topics that might be called 'The Least Offensive or Controversial' subjects to blog about (unless it's a SKIRTED TABLE!!!) and I blog about them a lot! It's a whole different kettle of fish to open dialogue to other sensitive topics. But for the record here's a bit about 'brave little 'ol' me:

Liberty Post Editor (est 2007): I'm a Canadian girl. Born in the Nation's Capitol, Ottawa & raised in Toronto & Montreal. I live on the turquoise shores of Wasaga Beach, Ontario. It's the longest fresh water beach in the world. You'd love it here. I'm a big girl now (almost 50.5) with 4 children and 3 spunky Granddaughters. Some of you may wonder why my header is 'American' looking. I am more interested in the symbol of Liberty than the country she lives in. (Although the U.S.A. is my neighbour and friend.) Freedom of expression. Society. Culture. Business. Design. Creativity. Writing. Photography. I share very random images and ideas on Liberty Post. I coined this my 'Gallery of Goods'. (Please feel free to dig around a bit in my catagories and archives. It's like a buffet. A little something for everyone.) I am astounded by the amount of people from all over the world who read my blog every day. I am so very grateful that you find it interesting. I appreciate all your comments and I get my bucket filled each morning by taking my blog tour over strong coffee. (You'll find all those links to incredible blogs in my right side bar.) I thank you for inspiring me.

Libby, Libby, Libby. I can't keep up with you. First you curse his behavior, and now you seem to almost condone it.

What gives?

LIBERTY POST EDITOR said...

OMFG: Tiger's private sexual needs and actions are completely different than his business transactions. One side of the coin I see - I feel very sad for Elin and his children. The other side of the coin I see - how corporations dump their champion because of his sexual choices and marriage problems. It is my opinion that they jumped the gun way too soon. It is my opinion that this makes a corporation look like an ass and hypocritical. I challenge any of you to post a difficult 'morality' subject and then come back and talk to me. It takes guts to blog and I feel mighty damn proud of my work thus far.

Libby, Much of a persons endorsements are based not only on performance, but on public opinion.
Being a celebrity is a double edged sword and certainly they should be allowed to have a private life, but, they should never forget who butters their bread, us.
Tiger Woods is no exception to this and has, through his actions, shit in his own nest.
The best he can hope for now is a good housekeeper.

He was so aware of what was at stake, that he paid those around him to cover for him (even the women). That is manipulative and it's human nature to not want to be manipulated/CONNED. People paid their hard earned money for the products that he was/is being paid GROSS amounts to endorse. It's okay for people to say "no" we're not gonna do that any more, we're not going to support that. In my opinion (to the person making reference to addiction), it's enabling his behavior. And my guess is that people will step up and continue to support what he really should be being paid for and that is his talent in the golf arena! Two different animals there folks. They DON'T go hand in hand.

Maybe it's as simple as this:
does someone buy a WATCH that Tiger endorses because he's a great golfer?

Interesting post. But these companies are not playing God or casting stones, or being hypocrites. Right or wrong Tiger is an image (an image he created) that helps sell products. Tiger benefited quite nicely from these companies that bought into his image. But when that image becomes tarnished or the butt of too many jokes, then the message these businesses are trying send is completely lost. They really don't have a choice at this point. This is a business decision, one that I'm sure they didn't want to make.

I hope Tiger can get help on his issues, and eventually repair his image as best he can. And I wouldn't worry about losing some of his sources of income. He has enough money to live, better than any of us could ever realize, for the rest of his life and then some.

I agree that he is only human, and I do feel sorry for him and his family. But he is the hypocrite for creating and cashing in on a false image.

I just found your blog from "brabourne farm". I will be back as it looks like you have interesting posts and pics.

The Gospel of John
8:1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
8:2 Now very early in the morning, he came again into the temple,
and all the people came to him. He sat down, and taught them.
8:3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman taken in adultery.
Having set her in the midst,
8:4 they told him, "Teacher, we found this woman in adultery, in the very act.
8:5 Now in our law, Moses commanded us to stone such.
What then do you say about her?"
8:6 They said this testing him, that they might have something to accuse him of.
But Jesus stooped down, and wrote on the ground with his finger.
8:7 But when they continued asking him, he looked up and said to them,
"He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her."
8:8 Again he stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.
8:9 They, when they heard it, being convicted by their conscience,
went out one by one, beginning from the oldest, even to the last.
Jesus was left alone with the woman where she was, in the middle.
8:10 Jesus, standing up, saw her and said,
"Woman, where are your accusers? Did no one condemn you?"
8:11 She said, "No one, Lord." Jesus said,
"Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more."

There is a big difference in being judgemental an holding someone accountable for thier actions. He is being held accountable. Act like a ho monger and we would perfer our good companies name(s) not be attached to those morals.
