I can name five female artist, but I cannot name five that have the name recognition that male artist do. Your post made me suck air in shock & shame at this fact and that I had not realized it before you commented. One of my favorite contemporary sculptors is the recently deceased Nikki St. Phalle. Her installations always make me smile in wonder. She has many pieces in San Diego as well as The Prado. Thank you for your blog, I enjoy your work.

Barbara Kruger came to mind immediately. Elliot Puckette. How about Grandma Moses? Oh and Elizabeth Peyton is my favorite contemporary artist.
