So many people are talking about their little private potager gardens. It's quite a remarkable thing that's happening. A plot of one's own is so stylish these days. The NY Times has an occasional blog post about growing your own vegetables and the 'Victory Garden'. In this difficult global economy, people are banking on gardening. “Survival Vegetables” are the most popular: peas, beans, corn, beets, carrots, broccoli, kale, spinach and the lettuces. Quite quaint and lovely actually.

This trend is also about a desire to get tasty vegetables on your plates. I know the idea of freshness is my motivation for wanting to grow my own vegetables.
Having said that, you save money on two fronts: on leisure expense since you will be occupied taking care of your crops and on the food itself.
Kim's comments are spot on, but I'd like to add another benefit - it's mind-altering abilities! MOTH says his vegie patch is his major form of relaxation, & he's a better boy for having spent some hours working on his plot.
Last night he walked into the kitchen with a bucket of freshly dug Pink-Eye potatoes. A few minutes later, lightly steamed with butter & fresh herbs they were magic!
