Indie Wire: Wasn't it considered an instant classic?
Al Maysles: It's funny that you say that because when we finished making the film, we brought the film with a projector to Grey Gardens, and afterwards Edie paused for a moment and then turned towards me, and in a very loud voice she shouted, "The Maysles have created a classic!" So that's one up on you, right? She already said that.
iW: That's an early review, indeed.
Al: It's funny you know, if you read the original New York Times review... the guy was totally out to lunch. He ended up by saying he thought it was a terrible exploitation of two people who were so crazy that they couldn't understand that they were being exploited. And he said, "Why are they showing all this flabby flesh?" A little problem with age. But actually, even more disturbing than that, was that Edie read it and wrote an answer to it, and they refused to publish it because the editor told me, "You can't publish this. She's schizophrenic."
iW: Wow. They missed the boat on that one.
Al: Stupidity in the highest form.

They (and their pets) were sharp enough to make them and eat ice cream. You've gotta love these gals.Big and Little Edie
Boho vintage? Fleas? Racoons? Cats? This video is a riot. Especially because in Grey Gardens style, the audio is completely out of sync. I love it! You can also purchase Albert scrapbook here.
Grey Gardens

Suzanne gave me a great compliment. She commented that my 'Gypsy of Pond Mansion' photographs reminded her of Grey Gardens. Thank you doll! I am a little spooked now because the 'real' film is being shot in Toronto and I didn't know that until right this second. That doc/show/upcoming film has been on my creative mind for some time now. (remember this post?)Perhaps that has been coming out in my work lately. I am so stoked to see the new movie. Based on the life stories of the eccentric aunt and first cousin of Jackie Kennedy (both named Edith Bouvier Beale aka "Big and Little Edie") raised as Park Avenue débutantes but who withdrew from New York society, taking shelter at their Long Island summer home, "Grey Gardens." As their wealth and contact with the outside world dwindled, so did their grasp on reality. They were reintroduced to the world when international tabloids learned of a health department raid on their home, and Jackie swooped in to save her relatives. You've got to watch this or this to fully understand. 3 Decades later...here's the house and there's my 'lily pond pics.'Drew Photo Credit: O'Neill/White/INF

Gypsy Lady of Pond Mansion

Some outtakes and good ones of a creative session near Toronto yesterday. Mysterious how my subjects always end up laughing. I tend to send them into hysterics. Don't mean to. It just happens. Go figure.Saturday, 28 June 2008
Marty's World Famous
Marty's Message:"Do you ever wonder why a party somehow always finds its way to the kitchen? The kitchen is a place where we come alive. It feeds us, nourishes us, and revitalizes us as we celebrate good food and great times with people we care for. The kitchen can be a place of comfort and joy and from here, we can be creative and express our artistic side with recipes that can leave us in awe. It is also a place where great childhood and family bonding memories are made. If you're like me, you were perhaps the one lucky enough to lick the spoon or help make a batch of mom's fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. Whatever your story sounds like, this is a great time to roll up your sleeves, find a great recipe and invite your friends and family over for a celebration. Enjoy every moment and remember...cook from the zone. My new website is ready for you (with the Muskoka Mocha recipe) and here's the Big Ass Pie Pan Liberty Post loves! (it's gigantic)" - Marty

The Big Dipper

The first dip. The first swoosh of the baby toe into the turquoise water. Hesitating until she discovers the warm velvet touch it offers. Refreshing. Familiar. Conquering. Lovely and ethereal. A summer triumph for a sweet Niece. I can feel that bay. Can you?

The Fog of Wasaga Beach
The sky was clear. Blue light with wisps of powder clouds shifting across the horizon. Bleu-Vert water. Then, without any notice a fog swallowed up the landscape and wrapped around the people. The beachers became a haze of eerie souls lurking on the moist sand. Horrifying. Sudden. Unsettling. In fact, hundreds stated they had never experienced anything like it before. But not me. I'd seen it before and so have you. Remember last year? Today's fog story spread around the small beach town as quickly as it came in. The rolling of it. The wet life it took on itself. Like this creepy sighting. Or this. More like this. I felt a chill and wondered what may appear from the mist.....And then it vanished as though it had never happened.

The History of a Designer, Jane Hall

Premiering here today. Jane Hall's visual mosaics that showcase her story; her incredibly creative history. (over 4 decades of talent. whoah.) Jane surprised me with these treasures! I couldn't wait to share them with you. She is also working on some new concepts for her site, so stay tuned. I feel as if I've met Jane before. Years ago. (perhaps in the figure skating world?) You can read more about Jane in this post I wrote or here at her colourful website. Again, I find myself watching the goosebumps on my arms as I type this. Earlier this week I announced my new project 'Hour Cultural Mosaic' and as you know, for the past year, I have considered this blog a Canadian Cultural Mosaic buffet - a bit of this and a touch of that. What strikes me here is the fact that Jane and I are somehow on the exact same wavelength with 'mosaics'. And, I will tell you...I don't mind that at all. I think it rocks. Don't you?

Real Estate Crashes in The Beaches, Toronto

And you thought that the Americans were the only ones having housing issues. Here is absolute proof that the value of homes that sit above the white bluffs; overlooking the crystal blue lake and steps away from the world-class boardwalk, are plummeting. Some local Politician(s) thought it would be a very bright idea to impose this law on the boys/men/cannucks of this Beaches neighbourhood. He shoots. He misses. Don't blame me for your icy offers. Go tear down those signs!

'Hour Cultural Mosaic'

Walk with me for sixty minutes and you will see 'Hour Cultural Mosaic'. It's a play on words. 'Our/Hour'. Something to create; walking...for free - you and me (and our cameras)....one round of the big hand...moving the little hand...and it is revealed. All the pieces that make up the whole. The breathing, moving, still life of our world. Never to offer an encore. Now that's priceless.Welcome to my new project: 'Hour Cultural Mosaic'.
